Objectives of the Experiential Classroom:

Help those who are new to the teaching of entrepreneurship, including both faculty and practitioners, to learn best classroom practices;

Remember the recent study from a Canadian company showed users with lower than average IQs are more likely to use Internet Explorer than other browsers? It might be a (very elaborate) hoax.

CBR found that AptiQuant’s — the supposed company behind the survey — website contains large chunks of text and images identical to the material found on the site of a psychometric testing company called Central Test. Compare these two pages, for example, and you’ll see that at least one of these companies is fake.

However, CBR has gotten a statement from Central Test claiming they don’t have any connection to AptiQuant, which pretty much cements the entire story as a hoax.

What’s amazing about this hoax is the attention to detail on AptiQuant’s website. For example, you can find earlier studies (also copy/pasted from Central Test’s studies), FAQ and the company’s full address — in short, everything else you would normally find on a website of such a company.

Furthermore, after releasing the initial article and the “study” behind it, AptiQuant did not remain silent, publishing a follow-up article saying it’s been threatened by a lawsuit from loyal IE users.

We’ve contacted both Central Test and AptiQuant but have not yet heard from either company

Welcome to the website of the Third International Conference on Science in Society, to be held at the The Catholic University of America, Washington DC, USA from 5 to 7 August 2011. This Conference will address disciplinary and interdisciplinary challenges in the sciences, and in particular the relationships of science to society.

Key themes addressed by the Conference include the social impacts of science, the values and ethics of science, the pedagogies of science, the knowledge-making processes of science, the politics of science and the economics of science. At first glance, the scope and concerns of the Conference are enormous. However, in contrast to conferences with a specialist disciplinary focus, this Conference aims to explore, in an interdisciplinary spirit, linkages between different areas of concern and practices of investigation. We welcome presentation proposals which range from broad explorations of philosophical, theoretical, methodological and policy questions, to proposals which present finely grained evidence of the connections of science to society in microcosms of research, teaching and practice.

Participants at the Conference will include researchers, teachers, administrators and policy makers from the basic natural-physical sciences, the applied sciences, the social sciences, history and philosophy of science, the humanities, and the professions.

Plenary speakers will include some of the world’s leading thinkers in the various fields which are concerned with the relationships of science to society, as well as numerous paper, colloquium and workshop presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers.

Participants are welcome to submit a presentation proposal either for a 30-minute paper, 60-minute workshop, or a jointly presented 90-minute colloquium session. Parallel sessions are loosely grouped into streams reflecting different perspectives or disciplines. Each stream also has its own talking circle, a forum for focused discussion of issues. For those unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual participation is also available.

We encourage all presenters to submit written papers to The International Journal of Science in Society, a fully refereed academic Journal. Virtual participants may also may also submit papers for consideration by the Journal. All Conference participants who have finalised their registration will receive a complimentary online subscription to the Journal. This subscription is valid until one year after the Conference end date.

The Inaugural Science in Society Conference was held at the University of Cambridge United Kingdom, in 2009.

The Science in Society Conference is a presenter’s conference, comprised of numerous parallel sessions.The Conference organising committee is inviting proposals to present 30-minute papers, or 60-minute workshops or 90-minute colloquium sessions. These may be:

Academic or research papers, or
Presentations describing educational initiatives.

The International Journal of Science in Society

Conference participants may submit papers to the Science in Society Journal, before the Conference and up until one month after the Conference. Papers submitted for publication will be fully refereed. The publication decision is based on the referees’ reports.

It is my pleasure to invite you, on behalf of the DESE11 Conference Organization Committee, to Contribute to the fourth annual conference on Developments in eSystems Engineering (DeSE'11) to be held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 14th to 16th December 2009.

In addition, there will be the possibility to participate online, a practical and inexpensive way to contribute, if you cannot make in person it to Abu Dhabi in December 2011.

Currently a high level of interest is being generated through the development of a wide and varied range of eSystems. The International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation will take
place in the beautiful city of Madrid (SPAIN)

This conference will be held at international level. The attendance of more
than 700 delegates from 70 different countries is expected.

You can present your papers in 3 presentation modalities: ORAL, POSTER or VIRTUAL

ICERI2011 will be an excellent opportunity to present your projects and
discuss the latest results in the field Education, Research and Innovation. We
invite you to submit your abstracts and to attend in order to share your
achievements in the fields of education and collaborative research. The
deadline for submitting abstracts is July 14th, 2011

Two ISBN publications will be produced with all accepted abstracts and papers:
ICERI2011 Abstract CD and ICERI2011 Proceedings CD. The accepted contributions
will be included in our Digital Library database of innovation projects in
Education and Research.

What would prompt you to earn a degree through an online college? For the successful and/or famous people listed below, travel, work and careers forced their hands, as they could not attend college when fixed schedules didn’t jive with their current lifestyles. While you might recognize names such as Shaquille O’Neal, other names listed below aren’t as familiar — but all the people listed below used online education to become successful in their endeavors.
The people listed below are in alphabetical order by given name, as we believe that Christie Keplinger’s success is just as important as Shaquille O’Neal’s fame.

Christie Keplinger: You don’t need to be famous to be successful, and Mark Twain knew this when he stated, “Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.” Keplinger found a flier in her local newspaper that led this working mother to two college degrees and a pivotal job promotion. She achieved her first degree at regionally-accredited Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College, and then she took advantage of another Eastern program — its partnership in the Community College Alliance with Franklin University of Columbus, Ohio. She earned her bachelor of science degree in accounting in December 2006 and was immediately promoted to vice president of Member Services at the bank where she worked.
Kerrii B. Anderson: This former president and CEO of Wendy’s International earned a 2007 cash compensation of $950,000. He was a graduate of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, a division of the college that now is largely Internet-based. She also serves on the Board of Visitors of the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and the Board of Trustees of Franklin University.
Kirkland H. Donald: Admiral Donald graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in oceanic engineering. He then went on to achieve his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. Additionally, he is a graduate of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Senior Executive Fellows Program. He currently is the director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion unit and is is authorized to wear the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with four gold stars, and the Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, in addition to several other personal and unit awards.
Lisa Leslie: When Lisa was age fourteen, universities such as Stanford contacted her, asking her to join them and to help boost their women’s basketball teams. She won a number of championships for her school in California, and enrolled in the University of Southern California for her undergraduate degree. She graduated in 1994 and, soon after, became part of the University of Phoenix’s list of notable alumni when she pursued a post-graduate degree in business administration. She also has modeled with the Wilhelmina Agency.
Lonnie B. Hodge: This guy has done it all, including accomplishing an online degree at New York Regents (now Excelsior University), where he declared he “never set foot on campus,” and upon graduation he was accepted into a traditional M.A. in education at the University of Colorado. He also accomplished an MFA in writing at Vermont College., and won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in writing (poetry) for work he created while studying at Vermont. Hodge now is a professor who teaches language, culture and global marketing in southern China and is the creator and CEO of Culture Fish Media, a social media agency.
Ross Mitchell: What better way to make your future successful than to blaze it yourself? When Ross Mitchell graduated from the nation’s first online-only law school at the Los Angeles-based Concord Law School four years ago, he knew that this school’s lack of American Bar Association (ABA) approval would disqualify him from taking the Massachusetts bar examination. But he sought permission anyway, taking his case all the way to the state’s Supreme Judicial Court and in November he won his case. In 10 years, Concord Law School has grown from 33 students to roughly 1,500. Mitchell’s was the first case in which a Concord graduate won the right to take a state bar exam by filing suit and appearing before that state’s Supreme Court.
Sarah Chenowith: You may wonder why this link leads to Sarah’s LinkedIn page, where you can learn about her role as the DNA Technical Leader at Anne Arundel County Police Department. If you scroll down, you’ll notice that she earned her MS in forensic DNA and serology through distance learning from the University of Florida in 2005. In her success story, printed at AOL, she stated, “In order to become a DNA technical leader (the senior position in most DNA testing labs), the FBI requires a master’s degree and several specific graduate-level courses. No universities in the area offered a degree with this specific focus, making it impossible for me to attend traditional classes without leaving my employer.” Since then, she’s encouraged three co-workers to enter the same degree program.
Shaquille O’Neal: This famous basketball player spent more than a year taking classes and doing online work for a master’s degree in business administration at the University of Phoenix. He graduated in 2005, making good on a promise to his mother to complete his education after leaving Louisiana State University as a junior in 1992 to turn pro. He completed his bachelor’s degree in business from LSU in 2000. He plans to earn his future doctorate in psychology.
Sharon T. Freeman: This woman earned her PhD online at Walden in applied management and decision sciences in 1998, going on to work with foreign aid and institutional reform in overseas countries. She has written a book, Conversations With African Women Leaders, and was recently named a subcontractor on a $2.4 billion Booz Allen contract with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which administers foreign aid to expand democracy and free markets.
Timothy Gates: As a Navy officer in Iceland, Gates enrolled in Strayer University’sonline courses to earn an accounting degree in 2005. He credits Stayer’s quarter system with allowing him to finish his undergraduate degree in such a short time. Based on the scientific merit and potential utility of his work, Gates recently placed third in the annual J. Dewey Lutes Peer Research Competition. He was also inducted into Upsilon Phi Delta, a national honor society for students in health care administration. Gates is a member and fellow of The American College of Healthcare Executives, the premier accrediting body for health care administrators.

I wish to thank you for your participation in our Conferences. Your involvement is a critical ingredient for success and we thank you most sincerely.

I hope that everyone is settled back into their non-conference rountines. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting with everyone and as usual made some new friends and even learned a thing or two. We will put all of the excellent advice we received into our next Conference—which will be May 23^rd, 24^th, and 25^th, 2012 at the Holiday Inn Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN.

This was our biggest year yet with 171 papers being presented. Despite the rough spots (bad weather, people having travel problems, Internet issues, printer problems, no shows, and one projector breaking) we were able to carry on with little distraction. For the first time we had live and interactive remote presentations (Azerbaijan, Greece, Italy, Taiwan, Washington, and California). While we do not wish to encourage remote presentations they did enable us to overcome some emergency situations.

I heard several comments concerning the quality of many presentations. The winners of the Excellence in Presentation Awards are listed below. Each presenter will received a certificate via postal mail shortly.

The International Conference on Learning and Administration in Higher Education seeks to focus exclusively on all aspects of learning and administration in higher education. We wish to bring together, a wide variety of individuals from all countries and all disciplines, for the purpose of exchanging experiences, ideas, and research findings in the processes involved in learning and administration in the academic environment of higher education.
We encourage the submission of manuscripts and abstracts in either of the following areas:

Learning
We encourage the submission of manuscripts pertaining to pedagogical topics. We believe that much of the learning process is not discipline specific and that we can all benefit from looking at research and practices outside our own discipline. The ideal submission would take a general focus on learning rather than a discipline-specific perspective. For example, instead of focusing on “Motivating Students in Group Projects in Marketing Management”, you might broaden the perspective to “Motivating Students in Group Projects in Upper Division Courses” or simply “Motivating Students in Group Projects” The objective here is to share your work with the larger audience.

Academic Administration
We encourage the submission of manuscripts pertaining to the administration of academic units in colleges and universities. We believe that many of the challenges facing academic departments are not discipline specific and that learning how different departments address these challenges will be beneficial. The ideal paper would provide information that many administrators would find useful, regardless of their own disciplines.
